Control Systems · Puzzle #43
Overshoot
What is Overshoot?
The amount by which a system's response peaks above its final steady-state value before settling back down, usually reported as a percentage of that final value. It's closely tied to damping ratio — an underdamped system overshoots noticeably, and pushing controller gain higher tends to make the overshoot grow further still.
The five clues
Engineerdle #43 described Overshoot with five clues, revealed one at a time from hardest to most direct. Each clue points at a different property of the concept.
- 01A step response's tendency to go too far before coming back.
- 02It's reported as a percentage above the final steady-state value.
- 03A more heavily damped system shows less of it, or none at all.
- 04Push a controller's gain too high and it tends to grow.
- 05The amount by which a system's step response exceeds its final steady-state value before settling.
