Thermodynamics · Puzzle #44
Isentropic Process
What is Isentropic Process?
A reversible, adiabatic process along which entropy stays exactly constant — the idealised, frictionless limit that no real machine ever quite reaches. Turbine and compressor efficiencies are defined by comparing actual performance against this ideal isentropic baseline.
The five clues
Engineerdle #44 described Isentropic Process with five clues, revealed one at a time from hardest to most direct. Each clue points at a different property of the concept.
- 01An idealisation that's both adiabatic and something else at once.
- 02That second condition is reversibility.
- 03No real process ever quite achieves it — friction and turbulence see to that.
- 04Turbine and compressor efficiency are both measured against this ideal baseline.
- 05A reversible adiabatic process, along which entropy stays exactly constant.
