Ziegler-Nichols Method

PUZZLE#48

What is Ziegler-Nichols Method?

A classic empirical method for tuning PID controller gains, starting by increasing proportional gain until the closed loop oscillates continuously at its 'ultimate' gain and period, then converting those two measured values into PID gains through simple published formulas. It gets a working controller running quickly without needing a full mathematical model of the plant.

The five clues

Engineerdle #48 described Ziegler-Nichols Method with five clues, revealed one at a time from hardest to most direct. Each clue points at a different property of the concept.

  1. 01A recipe for tuning a controller without needing a full mathematical model first.
  2. 02It starts by pushing the system to the very edge of instability, deliberately.
  3. 03From that edge, you read off one gain value and one oscillation period.
  4. 04Simple formulas then convert those two numbers into PID gains.
  5. 05A classic empirical method for tuning PID controller gains from a system's ultimate gain and oscillation period.
