Control Systems · Puzzle #33
Laplace Transform
What is Laplace Transform?
An integral transform mapping time-domain differential equations into algebraic equations in the complex s-domain. Differentiation in time becomes simple multiplication by s, which is exactly what makes transfer functions and block-diagram algebra possible.
The five clues
Engineerdle #33 described Laplace Transform with five clues, revealed one at a time from hardest to most direct. Each clue points at a different property of the concept.
- 01It turns calculus into algebra.
- 02Differentiation becomes multiplication by a variable.
- 03Its variable is complex, usually written s.
- 04Transfer functions live in the domain it creates.
- 05Named after a French mathematician and astronomer.
