Fluid Mechanics · Puzzle #50
Venturi Effect
What is Venturi Effect?
The pressure drop that occurs when a fluid accelerates through a constricted section of pipe. It's a direct consequence of pairing continuity with Bernoulli's principle, exploited whenever a device needs to draw in fluid with no moving parts at all.
The five clues
Engineerdle #50 described Venturi Effect with five clues, revealed one at a time from hardest to most direct. Each clue points at a different property of the concept.
- 01It relies on a deliberate constriction.
- 02It's a direct consequence of continuity plus Bernoulli.
- 03It's used to measure flow rate without any moving parts.
- 04It's how a paint sprayer and an aspirator draw fluid.
- 05Named after an 18th-century Italian physicist.
