Statics · Puzzle #28
Pulley System
What is Pulley System?
A system of wheels and a continuous rope used to redirect an applied force, and — once a moving pulley is added — to multiply it through mechanical advantage. A block and tackle stacks several pulleys together, letting one person lift a load many times heavier than they could manage unaided.
The five clues
Engineerdle #28 described Pulley System with five clues, revealed one at a time from hardest to most direct. Each clue points at a different property of the concept.
- 01A machine built from wheels, grooves, and a single continuous rope.
- 02A single fixed one only changes the direction of a pull, not its magnitude.
- 03Add a moving one and suddenly the force required actually drops.
- 04A block and tackle can stack several together for a dramatic mechanical advantage.
- 05A system of wheels and rope used to change the direction of a force or multiply it via mechanical advantage.
