Manufacturing · Puzzle #69
Pliers
What is Pliers?
A hinged hand tool that multiplies grip force at its jaws through leverage about a central pivot. Different jaw shapes trade off grip, cutting, and reach for different jobs — needle-nose for tight spots, slip-joint for adjustable width.
The five clues
Engineerdle #69 described Pliers with five clues, revealed one at a time from hardest to most direct. Each clue points at a different property of the concept.
- 01A hinged hand tool built around a simple lever at its pivot.
- 02One jaw squeezes against the other when you close your grip.
- 03Some variants add a wire-cutting edge near the pivot.
- 04You reach for a pair, never a single one — the name is always plural.
- 05The hand tool you grip and squeeze to hold, bend or pull small objects.
